Welina mai i ka ʻohana

On March 16, 2025, we welcomed two new wa'a (canoes) into our Imi Ola Canoe Club family: Mano Kihikihi and Kolea. We extend our special thanks to Kahu Kalama for assisting us in blessing these vessels and bringing forth their pureness.

Mano Kihikihi, constructed on Hawaii Island by Tiger Canoes, holds a unique status as the first of her kind on the Island of Oahu. She is part of the original ten wa'a that must be waterlined to meet the specifications set forth by HCRA. The name Mano Kihikihi translates to "Hammerhead Shark," embodying the spirit of our home at Mauliola, where stories tell of races once held with these remarkable creatures.

Our matahina, named Kolea, draws its inspiration from the Kolea bird, known for its migratory journey between Hawaii and Alaska. During its time in Hawaii, the Kolea bird feeds and grows in strength to prepare for the journey ahead. Similarly, the Kolea matahina, having participated in the IVF world sprints, symbolizes the connection between paddlers and distant lands. Like the Kolea, we gather strength through training in our practice, preparing to travel for races that connect us to various places and paddlers worldwide.
